The Tier of Respect for 99s in Runescape

I’ve noticed that every time I see a skill cape floating around RS, I am easily more impressed by some than others. Therefore, this is my attempt to try and rank the skills in order of how impressive their 99s are in my opinion.

Note: the categories are ranked, but the individual skills inside them are not ranked.

The Money 99s: These skills are the ones that require a crapload of money to get if, like the majority of Runescape players, people do not acquire their own resources, and if they do make their own resources, the it’s even better because they spent the time and effort to do everything by themselves. The reason it’s the most impressive is because people would have to work pretty hard in other skills to get all the money.

The Traveling 99s: These skills require patience and a lot of running around. They’re the next most impressive because in order to get a 99 in these skills, it usually takes a lot more time than other skills.

The Continuous Click 99s: These skills are the ones where you have to keep clicking something in order to level, whether it be a rock, monsters, bones, logs, etc. These skills are next in the line of respect because you need to pay attention to the game in order to achieve a 99 in them.

The Click and Wait 99s: These skills are the ones where you click something and sit around waiting for your character’s pixels to do all the work for you. They’re last in the respectable 99s because you still have to pay attention to the game, though not as much as the Continuous Click 99s, in case, say, your fishing spot moves, or your tree gets cut. Plus, the resources you get from these skills do not come instantaneously, so patience is still a virtue with them.

The Unrespectable 99s: While getting 99s in these skills is still a nice feat, the reason I don’t really respect these skills as much is because you can “click x” your way to 99. They are the fastest, easiest, and most common 99s to get.

Summoning??: I’m not categorizing summoning because I haven’t started the skill (yea I’m a noob, bite me), so I don’t really know what it’s like. However, from what I hear, summoning could probably be a category of its own.

End note: I’m not saying that I don’t really respect anyone who has the patience and time to get a skill to 99, I’m just saying that some I respect more than others.

The Community Event

When I saw the update for a Community Event today on Runescape, I’ll admit I was a little hyped. When I saw that it was a series of clues, I got slightly more hyped. When I solved the clue after I read it through a second time, my hype died a little, but I’ll wait until I’ve finished all the clues to form a base opinion about the event. Hopefully they do get harder though (Jagex said they would, but their definitions of hard are never really brain-wracking challenging). However, I do like this update because it’s something different. Besides holiday events, Jagex has never really had any sort of “community event.” I know in many other MMORPGs there are lots community events (more exp/special items on certain days, tournaments, etc), but I’ve noticed that there really aren’t that many with Runescape; most updates on RS are permanent updates to the game. I’d really like to see Jagex expand more with community events in the future, but for now I’ll be content with this one.

On another note, I finally got 91 fishing!

I got half of this level through sharks, which made it ridiculously slow. However, I did get about a 5m profit off it, so I’m content with that. I’m back to fishing lobsters now, and the speed difference is extremely evident. I’ll give up profit for speed for now until I get to 92. Also, is it just me or do cage/harpoon spots seem to move around a lot faster than net/harpoon spots?

I apologize again for the lack of updates; I needed to stop procrastinating on college applications.

Edit: HOLY CRAP! Since when did masks become 25-40+ mil?! The last time I checked they were only 10-20mil, although granted that was ages ago, but still ….I guess my mask dream is still eons away.

Weekend Log: 10/16-09-10/18/09

I think the highlight of this weekend was completing the Fremennik Trials quest, which I did solo because Rune Beast0 had already done it. It was fairly easy until I got to Koschei the Deathless.

See, when I looked at a guide and saw that I only had to defeat his third form and not his fourth, I decided it would be a pretty easy fight. That it definitely was until the fourth form. I decided to be a little bold and attempt to kill the fourth form, so I recharged my prayer, ate some food to regain health, and went off into battle. About three minutes in, my prayer ran out, so I decided to let Koschei kill me.

And he did. Literally. I ended up in Lumbridge, extremely confused as to why I was actually dead.

I went back to Rellekka, got my items from my grave, and, seeing as I still had a good amount of food left, decided to try again. Back I went into the battle, and when I hit his fourth form, I again attempted to kill him, and again I decided to give up after I saw I most likely wouldn’t be able to accomplish that. So as Koschei was chipping down my health…

…my ring of life tele-d me to Lumbridge when I was at 7 hp.

At this point, I was pretty darn annoyed, so I spent 100k or so on supplies. I went back to Rellekka armed with super attack and super strength pots, prayer pots, and sharks. After a very long, very slow, very tedious battle, I had him down to about half health when my prayer pots ran out. I still had a good number of sharks though, so I kept going at it.

Then Koschei left as I was eating my third to last shark.

After this failure, I was ready to stab something. Thoroughly annoyed, I decided I wouldn’t even attempt the fourth form anymore (which I have no idea why I didn’t from the beginning; I think the fact that I actually died the first time put me in the mindset that I had to kill his fourth form) and would just let myself die after the third form without eating or drinking pots or anything.

It finally worked. I used no prayer, no food, no anything during his fourth form, and FINALLY I finished him off the way I was supposed to, got Thorvald’s vote, and finished off Fremennik Trials.

You know what I think about you Koschei?:

Yea. That’s what I think. That’s what I wish I could do in RS and make you die in agony.

I also raised my agility up a bit to 42 and my firemaking up to 60 (after I saw I had 1k willows sitting in the bank doing nothing). I’m probably going to do a little bit of crafting soon so that I can get 46 crafting, finish off Fremennik Isles, and get the Helm of Neitiznot finally. Yes, I know my skills kind of suck, but that’s what I get for being busy all the time with real life and doing nothing but fishing for the past year and a half.

The Rude and the Nice

I’ve long gotten over the fact that not everyone on Runescape is all rainbows and flowers. However, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t still irk me when people are rude to others. For example, yesterday I was standing in the west Varrock bank waiting for Rune Beast0 when someone decided to tell me that I’m a noob, that I don’t deserve to live, that I should die for the better of the world, and that they despise me. Keep in mind I had never seen this person in Runescape before. Normally I would have kept quiet, but I got rather annoyed at this unexpected occurence and said some small things back, such as “the feeling’s mutual then” when he/she told me that they despised me, as well as “well clearly you don’t hate me that much if you’re still talking to me,” or something along the lines of that. This was probably one of the rarer occasions of rudeness, but it still annoyed me a lot that someone would go out of their way that much to insult someone.

On the flip side, while this was occuring, a kind soul said “that’s not nice” when the aforementioned person told me to go die. As I walked to the Grand Exchange, he/she followed me out and asked me if I was alright. This level of kindness surprised me a little, and I told him/her that yes, I was fine, and that I was used to rudeness online. I thanked him/her for caring, and then we both went on our ways. This made my annoyance abate quite a bit just knowing that there was a nice person out there for every rude one.

It just goes to show that you can find people on totally opposite ends of the spectrum.

Co-Op Questing: Dwarf Cannon and Horror from the Deep

Since Rune Beast0 and I seem to be particularly fond of co-op questing, I thought I’d just keep a little journal of our questing here. Today, we embarked on and finished Dwarf Cannon and Horror from the Deep (yes, we both haven’t done many quests). Note: Rune Beast0 doesn’t usually fail as much as he does when he does quests. XD We also call each other noob a lot, which is not advocating our immaturity but is instead moreso a term for a failure.

Dwarf Cannon

Thankfully, Dwarf Cannon had no required items, so there was no hour-long getting ready period like there was yesterday for Family Crest. Instead, there was a little bit of silliness:

He gave me dwarf shorts before, and omg they are short. I’m never wearing them again, ever.

Anyway, we went off on a long trek to that place west of the Fishing Guild (does it have a name?). The first instance of co-op questing failure began shortly after we both began the quest:

Rune Beast took the dwarf remains first, so I got stuck waiting for them to respawn. They eventually did after awhile, but it was still annoying because then he got ahead of me XD. Note: O Canada Dungeon = the dungeon just outside the Fishing Guild full of goblins.

Today was also a day where Runescape decided to lag every other minute, so while I was stuck trying to catch up to Rune Beast, he had some navigation issues:

I eventually caught up to him though and met him in the Dwarven Mines. However, after running around a bit, we realized we both made a mistake:

The dwarf we were looking for was actually not underground in the mines. Oops. We then went back aboveground where I went and talked with Nulodion to get the ammo mould. Fatal error on Rune Beast’s part though:

He thought the multicannon was the one at the Dwarven Mines, which sucks because then he had to go all the way back and fix the one at the place west of the Fishing Guild. He eventually got it though, and we both managed to finish the quest efficiently and smoothly. Rune Beast suggested we both buy a cannon and use them in Horror of the Deep, but after we realized the cannon would cost about 750k, we decided against that (or more like my cheapness decided against that).

Horror of the Deep

Not many pictures for this one since there wasn’t much going on, it was a short quest, and I forgot to hit print screen as much as I did in Dwarf Cannon.

Anyway, Horror of the Deep began with a lovely trek to the middle of nowhere, aka the Lighthouse. There was a little bit of annoyance as I tried to cross over the rocks to reach the lighthouse and kept failing (low level agility ftl). Rune Beast got behind me as he forgot the lighthouse key and had to go all the way back to get it. There was also a little more failure as I went around for a good five minutes trying to figure out how to fix an unbroken bridge:

After I fixed everything in the lighthouse, I went back to Seers Village to gather my combat gear. Since my range is only 32 (I hate range with a passion), I had to look a little ridiculous gathering items that would boost both combat and magic instead of just wearing dhide. Here’s the end result (and my inventory):

Rune Beast caught up with me as I was getting my combat stuff ready, and then we both trekked back to the lighthouse for the epic battle against Dagannoth. It ended up being quite a bit easier than we both thought it would be (we were both freaking out a bit after reading the quest guide and seeing how combat would vary when fighting Dagannoth). There was only one small issue of Rune Beast forgetting runes for the other elemental spells, but I gave him my extra death runes, so that catastrophe was yet again avoided. I ended up getting the Saradomin book, which I promptly regretted as I realized I really didn’t need to boost defense. Rune Beast, being more intelligent than I, got the Zamorak book. There was a bit of angst as Rune Beast realized he’d need around 1.4-1.5m to finish his book, and I was rather elated that mine would only take about 300k. After I fill mine though, I’m going to get the Zamorak one. And with that, we finished off yet another quest together.

Oh heck yea.

Attempting Quests Co-Op

I’m finally reviving RS Muser after ages (again). I dropped it a little bit at first because I didn’t play Runescape that much, but I’ve decided that it doesn’t matter if I don’t play Runescape every day; it’s still nice to blog about it. There’s one change though: I’ve changed my name to Aer Wynn instead of Bluebrisingr. I’m still not too sure how I like this change, but I’ll see at the end of the month. I’m leaning towards changing it back though, because the name feels so exotic and different, so all of the stuff on this blog is staying Bluebrisingr for now.

Anyways, Rune Beast0 and I decided to do Family Crest together, after we had both spent a day tanking our magic to 55 so that we could magic potion our way through it. I must say, it’s quite a different feeling when you’re doing quests together with someone else, and it does tend to be a lot more fun. However, it’s obvious that Jagex hasn’t anticipated people doing quests co-op. We got majorly hindered at the part with the levers after both of us tried to do it simultaneously and failed. After quite a few runs, we ended up just waiting for one to complete the levers and get the ore and then the other would go. It was really nice having another person there though to help out with things. For example, when Beast was mining the “perfect” gold ores, I helped him out by attacking the hellhounds so that he wouldn’t get attacked while he was mining. He did the same for me by keeping the red spiders busy as I killed Chronozon at the end. It was also rather humorous, as we had a few “close catastrophe evasions,” once when Beast thought he had messed up the ruby necklace/ring making part, another time when he almost made two ruby necklaces, and a few more that I can’t really remember.

It would be really nice to see some quests in Runescape aimed towards completion with more than one player, and I don’t mean quests like Shield of Arrav where you had to find another person in the other gang to get the other piece of the shield. I’d like to be able to have to actually interact with the other person fully, such as maybe an obstacle course that must be completed by two or more people (like in those cliche video games based off movies where, say, one person pushes a button which sets an elevator moving and the other person has to ride up the elevator to push another button that will allow the first person to move on …I’m bad at explaining things, sorry). This would make for a much more enjoyable quest, in my opinion.

Beast and I plan on doing more quests together though, despite the fact that they’re aimed towards one person, which should be rather interesting. I also finally now have gloves that match my desert boots, since mime gloves are a different shade of white (yes, that’s the reason I wanted to do Family Crest XD).

In other things, I’m less than 400k away from 91 fishing. Still so far ):

Skilling Crazy

I’ve been going a little skill crazy these past few days as I’ve been on vacation in California. I believe I’ve gained nearly 100 levels (90-100) in various skills, and probably about 130-140 levels this summer, so my total now is 1008. Granted it’s not that impressive because most of my P2P skills were low level, so it was easy to get them up, but still for me it’s a rather big achievement. I got pretty bored of fishing, so I decided to train my P2P skills while I still can. Here’s what went up this summer:

Fletching: 50 (+50 levels)
Agility: 38 (+30 levels)
Herblore: 12 (+9 levels)
Fishing: 88 (+3 levels)
Range: 32 (+1 level)
Thieving: 20 (+18 levels)
Magic: 48 (+1 level)
Farming: 10 (+2 levels)
Construction: 35 (+35 levels)
Hunter: 3 (+2 levels)

Yes, I know most of them aren’t too impressive …on second thought none of them are impressive, but I’m happy that I finally have a 1k+ total skill level. Now back to fishing…

Apologies for the Negligence

I went off to Governor’s School for the month of July. I’ve been back for a couple weeks now, but nothing interesting has been happening in RS too much. I’ll be posting more general RS articles soon. For now though, here’s 4mil exp and 88 fishing! I’ll also be getting up my “Mission Fishin’ – 99 Fishing” page up soon.

I got a fishing level today! Only 10m more to go ….ugh.

I love how the prices are rising when I’m selling my fish, but then I hate it when I’m trying to buy things. The dragon armor set used to be 4.7m, now it’s about 5.2m. Ah well, hopefully prices will recede soon.

More interesting posts will be coming, really.

Edit: WTF?

Why must female characters on Runescape show their waist when wearing chainbodies?! That’s just stupid and ridiculous. I would really appreciate being able to not dress like a ho in both real life and in game. Jagex, I demand a change. This is sexism people.

Finally Gave It Up

I finally sold my full rune Guthix that I’ve had for about a two years or so now. It was a hard parting, but I shall get over it soon, hopefully. I’m trying to get dragon armor, and after I sold all my fish I was still 2m away, so I sold some death runes and my full rune Guthix to get the amount needed. I’m buying it in pieces since I don’t need the shield. So far only the med helm has come in. Ah well.

I’m also merchanting feathers. I’ve been selling 165k feathers in the GE at max price for about a week now, and so far 110k have sold. I’ll see how long it takes me to buy them all back at min price. Before it took about two weeks. It’s slow money, but at least it’s some profit, and it’s faster than buying coal+iron, smelting them, and selling the steel bars.

And of course, I can’t forget fishing. 35k until 87, woo! I’m hoping to get to 92 by the end of this summer. At this rate, it looks like it’ll happen.
